Overview
A half day walking out of Puerto Villamil past 2.5 km of white-sand beach, lagoons and mangroves to the lava wall built by prisoners of Isabela's penal colony between 1946 and 1959.
This half-day excursion starts at 07:30 from Puerto Villamil. The Wall of Tears dates from the Isabela penal colony, which operated between 1946 and 1959: prisoners were forced to carry and stack lava blocks into a wall roughly 100 metres long.
The route runs along trails through about 2.5 kilometres of white-sand beach, plus lagoons and mangrove areas. Along the way you can see the four types of mangrove found on Isabela and coastal birds including sandpipers, ruddy turnstones, plovers, oystercatchers, lava gulls, mockingbirds and Darwin's finches. Interpretive signs explain the history and the natural features.
At the wall there is time to take in the monument and its story. Return to Puerto Villamil at approximately 13:00.
